After a long day, you come home and collapse on the sofa. Whether or not you perceive that as a good thing depends on what your five senses tell you about your home. If one of your five basic senses of sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste are irritated in some way, the experience of being home is not relaxing. A clean and clutter-free home can lower your stress levels and sooth your senses and calm you after a busy day.

A clean and clutter-free home can add so much to the quality of your life, but with the busy schedules we all have, it is difficult to give your home the attention it deserves. One way to quickly and effectively manage the clutter in your home is to focus your attention on each one of your senses. Take in the messages of your senses and note any irritation. Then focus on that area to bring your home back to the balance you need to feel relaxed.

Start with your sense of sight. Notice the areas of the room that look cluttered, dusty or are aesthetically unpleasant. Look for bunches of cords or stacks of magazine. Check for dust in the corners. If there is a nice view out the window, can you see it or is it cover by too much window drapery.

Next notice how does the room sounds. Do you hear quiet or is there an unpleasant background noise? Is the volume on the television or stereo too high? Some houses with high ceilings and wood or tiled floors gives the impression of sounding “hollow”. Are there enough rugs to absorb the “sound bounce”.

Check the flow of air with your sense of smell by noticing if the room smells clean or if it is full of stale odors. Check to see if the air vents are covered by furniture. Can the windows be opened to let in fresh air? Are there live plants in the room to help with air quality? Stale air can also offend your sense of taste with old food odors that haven’t cleared or heavy air fresheners.

Turn your attention to the feel of the furniture when you sit down. Does it sag or is it too hard? Do the proportions fit the room or is it too big or too small? Just like Goldilocks in the home of the three bears, evaluate all the furniture for comfort and for position. Notice the temperature.

Becoming aware of how you experience your home by looking, feeling, hearing and smelling each room helps you evaluate where the problem areas are that need immediate attention. Some people have a high tolerance for visual clutter, but are very reactive to sound irritation. Find the spots that most interfere with your relaxation and focus your efforts there.
